Tourism council asks people to #PictureOleBrook

An ongoing effort to further promote the arts has begun in the downtown area of Brookhaven.
The kickoff artwork for the Brookhaven Tourism Council’s Picture Ole Brook project is a mural by Brookhaven artist Derek Covington Smith, at the corner of South Jackson and West Chickasaw streets. Utilizing bright colors and bold black lines, the painting begun by Smith Wednesday on the south side of the J. Allan’s building has already drawn the attention of passersby.
Smith said people have stopped and inquired about what he was painting and the purpose behind it. Picture Ole Brook is born from a vision to further “the development of a Brookhaven where public art and creative expression are at the center of a vibrant and prosperous community,” Smith said.
Katie Nations, program director for the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, said enhancing quality of life for Brookhavenites is always at the forefront of her mind.
“The council has discussed public art for some time and are excited to finally get moving on the project, which we hope will be ongoing for years to come,” Nations said. “Collaborating with Derek was a no-brainer when the council began discussing a creative director for the project. He has great connections to tons of other Mississippi artists as well that we hope to bring in for future displays that will include murals of a range of sizes, sculptures, portable paintings, temporary installations and rainworks.”
Nations said the hope of the council is that people of all ages can walk around town and enjoy the art, whether they are locals or visitors to the city.
“We encourage people to engage in the art by using the hashtag #pictureolebrook when posting on social media as well,” she said.
