GP chip mill fire extinguished with response from area fire fighters

A fire at the Georgia-Pacific chip mill on Auburn Road Wednesday evening, June 17, was extinguished with assistance from all area fire departments.

The fire started in the plant’s debarker, according to Lincoln County Emergency Management Director Clifford Galey.

Zetus Volunteer Fire Department responded. All other VFDs were called to assist.

“All eight County VFDs responded, with assistance from Franklin and Lawrence counties,” Galey said.

Brookhaven Fire Department was called to assist shortly thereafter, said BFD Chief Ainsworth.

“They called us for mutual aid around 6 p.m.,” Ainsworth said. “They needed our ladder truck to spray in the top of the chipper.”

The fire was extinguished around 9 p.m. and the cause is under investigation.
