Families United concludes successful summer program

Families United Training Center kicked off its summer enrichment program June 7 and concluded it this week on June 24, with documented gains in learning and growth in math and language literacy measured by a summative assessment.
“We believe that education is vital to a child’s development and that, with the right support, every child has the potential to succeed in school,” said Falana McDaniel, FUTC founder and director.
“This summer enrichment program was designed to promote the academic success of disadvantaged youth. We believe that programs do not have to look like traditional summer school to get good results that are engaging and inspiring for students,” McDaniel said. “The documented gains in learning and growth that we anticipated will benefit the underprivileged, minority students academically.”
The academic content was blended with projects and other activities that engaged students. The results were surprising and exciting, McDaniel said.
The gain in learning and growth for each child was significant in the context of summer loss.
“Research has found that this opportunity gap contributes to the achievement gap between advantaged and disadvantaged youths,” McDaniel said. “However, our summer enrichment program proves its value for underprivileged youth.”
