Virus update: 2 new deaths, 796 new cases in MS

Testing centers across the state reported 796 new COVID-19 positive test results for July 9-11, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health. Two new coronavirus-related deaths were also reported during that time — one in Chickasaw County and one in Hinds County, which was identified from a death certificate on a July 4 fatality.

Mississippi has reported a total of 324,853 positive virus test results and 7,441 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Lincoln County has reported a total of 4,042 cases and 113 deaths. Approximately 1.1% of all persons tested in the county have had positive test results. Since January 2021, the majority of positive cases have been in people at least 40 years old.

Of total cases, 48.3% have been in people who stated their race as “white,” regardless of ethnicity (Hispanic, non-Hispanic or unknown). Thirty-three percent have been black. Of the remaining cases, 12.9% were classified as “unknown,” 4.5% as “other,” 0.7% as Native American and 0.5% as Asian.

Of the 7,441 reported deaths related to the novel virus, 54.2% have been people identified as white, 39.6% black persons, 1.5% Native American, 0.3% Asian and 4.4% “other” or “unknown.”

MSDH presumes 312,956 individuals have recovered from coronavirus infections, leaving 4,456 people still sick with the virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still recommends washing hands frequently, wearing a mask if not fully vaccinated or around others who are not fully vaccinated, keeping general surfaces clean and self-quarantining if exposure to the virus is suspected.
