Look out Laurel, the Lincoln County Dixie Youth 10U All-Stars are headed to the World Series. After an unbeaten run through the state tournament that was capped with a 5-2 win over Philadelphia Monday in the championship game, the team now moves on to play next in the World Series hosted by Laurel on Aug. 6-12.

The team is coached by Waylon Book, Patrick Holcomb and Christopher Robinson. Team members include JB Baker, Kayden Book, Carter Evans, Braxton Fortenberry, Ethan Hite, Cruz Hamil, Fisher Holcomb, Collin Holmes, Tripp McDowell, Elliot Peavey, Reece Robinson and Owen Webb.

In the state tournament at Kosciusko, the LC All-Stars began their run to the title with a 7-6 win over Hattiesburg in the opening round.

That would be as close as anyone would get to beating them though as they topped Philadelphia 10-5 on Saturday and won a pair of games Sunday — 14-4 over Columbia and 13-3 over Green County.

The team wasn’t just impressive with the way they threw and hit the ball; they also drew the attention of their opponents with how they handled their business.

After winning the tournament, the team was also awarded the Bill Selby Memorial Sportsmanship Award. The award is voted on by the tournament’s coaches.

“I think the boys were just as fired up to win the sportsmanship award as they were about the state title,” said Patrick Holcomb.

Lincoln County already knows they face Team Tennessee when the World Series begins in Laurel.

Holcomb says the squad will work together three times a week — two on the field and one in the cage — as they try and stay sharp ahead of the World Series.

“We pitched, hit and played good defense all weekend,” said Holcomb. “We got down big against Hattiesburg in our first game and scored five in the sixth to come back. After that we just kept playing our best ball and stayed hot.”

10U ball is called the AAA division by the Dixie Youth Organization, and the World Series will have 11 teams contending for the title.

“The boys set a goal of winning our district tournament and they did that without losing a game,” said Holcomb. “The next goal was winning state and I know they’re going to want to Laurel and win it too. It’s a great group of kids that really enjoy playing together.”
