Co-Lin Workforce graduates 13 medical assistants

Thirteen recently graduated the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant non-credit training program at Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

They were Chelsea Thadison, Oracy Hackney and Nydra Kelly of Brookhaven; Demesha Deer of Bogue Chitto; Hannah Wells and Adrienne Cook of Wesson; Charles Young of Monticello; Kristy Demorest of Hazlehurst; Tracey Lee and Courtney Creel of McComb; Caitlyn Buchanan of Foxworth; Arlena Rogers of Magee; and Shawnnae Smith of Mendenhall.

The Workforce Education division’s CCMA six-month program began in February, and graduates have earned skills necessary to provide clinical and administrative support to healthcare providers.

A CCMA works alongside doctors and nurses to administer medications, obtain laboratory specimens, assist with minor procedures, perform electrocardiograms, provide patient education, record vital signs, administer injections and execute administrative office tasks.

Training topics included, but are not limited to, medical terminology, basic pharmacology, nutrition, psychology, anatomy and physiology, clinical patient care, infection control, testing and laboratory procedures, phlebotomy, patient care coordination and education, administrative assistant skills, and medical law and ethics. In addition to classroom curriculum, students are required to participate in scheduled computer lab studies and clinical rotations. Once training is successfully completed, students will be eligible to test for the National Healthcareer Association CCMA National Board exam for licensure.

A high school diploma or equivalency/GED is required for enrollment. Participants must also take the ACT WorkKeys Assessment and earn a silver level or greater National Career Readiness Certificate.
