Wesson Garden Club kicks off new year

The Wesson Garden Club kicked off its 2021-2022 year on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the American Legion Hall #79.

Those in attendance were Marilyn Britt, Sonya Cowen, Robin Furr, Debbie Hoaglin, Rhonda Ishee, Denise Jackson, Camille Johnston, JoAnn Miller, June Owens, Pam Owens, Jennifer Peets, Joy Phillips, Jean Ricks, Debbie Smith, Lisa Smith, Nikki Smith, Dixie Thornton and Joy Wesbrooks. Also in attendance were guests Sherri Carty, Pam McLemore, and Meghan Shepherd whom the Club welcomed as new members. Hostesses were members of the Executive Committee — Dixie Thornton, Denise Jackson, Pam Owens, June Owens, Jean Ricks, Debbie Hoaglin and Debbie Smith.

The meeting opened with the members reciting the Collect led my Jean Ricks. President Dixie Thornton presented an overview of the summer’s events and activities including National Garden Week, the Butterbeans Lanoux Youth Camp, and Community Outreach Project with Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

Guest speakers were Club members Jennifer Peets and Lisa Smith. Both were the inspiration in forming The Butterbeans Youth Gardeners in 2018 and serve as co-chairs of The Youth Garden Club. They are dedicated advocates in teaching and exposing the love of gardening and protecting the environment to the younger generations. A slide show of past activities was shown along with a discussion of upcoming events and activities planned for the youth gardeners this year.

The Club was called to order by Pres. Thornton to conduct the Club’s business. Activities and events for the new year were presented. The Wesson Garden Club will host the Natchez Trace District Fall Workshop on Oct. 5 at the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Thames Center. After hearing Committee Reports, the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting is Sept. 7.

The Club’s is now holding its Annual Fall “MUM” Sale. Order forms will be available at the Wesson Trustmark Bank, from Wesson Garden Club members, or for more information call 601-835-8614. Order deadline is Sept. 7. Orders are to be picked up at the Wesson City Park Pavilion on Thursday, Sept. 30, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
