Here’s a look at how other area teams fared on the road Friday night.

Loyd Star 48, McLaurin 14

The Loyd Star Hornets moved to 2-0 on the season with a big win over McLaurin in Rankin County.

Junior running back Bryce Ford was out after getting nicked up in an overtime win last week against St. Andrew’s Episcopal.

The Hornets picked up that lost production easily as Julius Smith ran for a pair of scores while senior running back Versie Wilson and junior quarterback Carter Holcomb kept the Hornets and coach Brian Ford ahead of the chains all night.

Loyd Star will play at Salem next week as the Walthall County Wildcats have been off for two weeks with a quarantine.

Lawrence County 12, Lumberton 6

Coach Jesse Anderson and his group of Lawrence County Cougars went to Lumberton Friday night and knocked off the defending MHSAA 1A state champions in a defensive battle.

The game was the first of the season for LC as they had their opener last week at Brookhaven High cancelled by COVID-19 issues.

The same thing happened to Lumberton ahead of their scheduled opener against Purvis. Lawrence County will host Natchez Friday in Monticello.

Sacred Heart 42, West Lincoln 14

It appears that the Sacred Heart Crusaders are much improved in 2021. Last week Sacred Heart broke a 20-game losing streak with a big win over St. Patrick.

Friday, they ran out to an early lead over visiting West Lincoln in south Hattiesburg and never looked back.

The game was the first of the season for West Lincoln as they had their opening scrimmage and first game of the season last week at Franklin County scratched by COVID-19 quarantines.

Coach Brad Bland and his team will get a chance to play in front of their home fans on a newly resodded Perry Miller Field Friday against Puckett.
