Tuesday’s COVID numbers are down, but may be skewed due to the Labor Day weekend.

Twenty-one new deaths and 704 new positive test results of COVID-19 were reported by the state Tuesday.

Numbers are from results submitted to the Mississippi State Department of Health as of 3 p.m. the previous day.

Mississippi has now had 453,348 cases of COVID-19 and 8,685 related deaths. In long-term care facilities, 11,008 cases have been reported, and 2,052 fatalities.

Of the more than 450,000 cases, 264,932 are confirmed — determined by PCR tests, which detect the presence of ongoing coronavirus infection. Probable cases are those who test positive by other testing methods such as antibody or antigen, and have recent symptoms consistent with COVID-19 — MSDH reports 188,416 cases to date.

Deaths are confirmed in the same manner as cases, and MSDH has recorded 5,899 confirmed deaths; 2,786 deaths are considered probable COVID-19 deaths. These are those individuals with a designation of COVID-19 as cause of death on the death certificate, but where no confirmatory testing was performed.

Lincoln County has had 5,037 positive cases of the coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic, and 123 related deaths. There have been 200 LTC facility cases in the county and 40 deaths therein.

To-date totals for the seven surrounding counties are:

• Amite — 1,850 cases, 49 deaths

• Copiah — 4,022 cases, 79 deaths

• Franklin — 1,106 cases, 26 deaths

• Jefferson — 847 cases, 32 deaths

• Lawrence — 1,961 cases, 30 deaths

• Pike — 5,158 cases, 125 deaths

• Walthall — 1,955 cases, 54 deaths

Issaquena County remains the county with the lowest numbers in both categories — 186 cases and six deaths, no LTC facility cases or deaths.

The following counties have each had more than 20,000 total cases:

• De Soto — 28,440 cases, 318 deaths

• Harrison — 30,728 cases, 430 deaths

• Hinds — 29,947 cases, 545 deaths (the most deaths in any one county)

• Jackson — 21,996 cases, 314 deaths

• Rankin — 20,547 cases, 339 deaths

As of 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, King’s Daughters Medical Center in Brookhaven had 16 people hospitalized with COVID-19, all who were unvaccinated. Seven were in the intensive care unit and all were on ventilators.

Of the 73 people seen in the emergency room over the previous 24 hours, 29 were COVID-related.

KDMC has administered 73 monoclonal antibody infusions in September to-date, and administered 587 infusions in August.
