‘Anne of Green Gables’ starts tonight

When aging siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert send to the orphanage in Nova Scotia for a boy to help them on the farm, a mix-up leaves them with 11-year-old Anne Shirley, better known to readers and play-goers as “Anne of Green Gables.”

The popular play begins tonight at The Haven Theater on West Cherokee Street in Brookhaven as the Brookhaven Little Theatre takes on the beloved classic.

With nightly performances at 7:30 p.m. through Saturday, and 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday, the two-hour play will kick off BLT’s 2021-2022 season.

BLT board president Steven McMorris said a number of people have requested the community theater take on this story.

“This is a timeless story and many people have read the books,” McMorris said. “We just wanted to see that story come to the stage.”

The play will be directed by Chris Roebuck. Roebuck has done a lot of work with New Stage Theatre in Jackson and has helped with previous BLT shows.

BLT has announced four other plays or musicals to be performed during the season, plus a return of an annual January favorite.

“Elf: The Musical” will herald the Christmas season Dec. 3-12.

The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra will return to The Haven Jan. 14. More events will be announced “soon” for The Haven Concert Series.

The spring performance, April 1-10, will be “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast: The Broadway Musical.”

Summer’s productions are Disney events, as well — the BLTeen Summer Camp presentation of “Descendants: The Musical,” June 23-26; and The Haven Kids Summer Camp presentation of “The Aristocats Kids,” July 21-22.

Tickets can be purchased for individuals, families or corporate sponsorships.

This year’s season ticket purchases also include membership to the Theatre.

“This membership plays such an important role for theatre and patron involvement and also offers many perks throughout each season,” the post read.

More information on each performance, as well as a link to pre-purchase tickets, can be found at haventheatre.org.
