Mitchell was a man that taught his ten children the value of an honest and hard day’s work. He instilled in them the desire to hunt, garden, and raise animals to provide for their families. Mitchell loved to work the land, and he raised an amazing garden every year, sharing his bounties with neighbors and loved ones.

Mitchell was preceded in death by his mother and father; his twin brothers; a niece; and a great nephew.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Helen Boyte Smith; 10 children; his seven sons, Danny Smith (Paula), Mark Smith (Anita), Bryan Smith, James Mason (Debbie), Michael Smith, Mitchell Smith (Kim) and Justin Smith; his three daughters, Debbie Alexander (Doyle), Christine Crawford (Jack) and Della Thomas (Tim); his brother, Carroll Bruce Smith (Wynell); his sister, Cathy Tisdale (Eddie); 26 grandkids; 25 great-grandkids; and numerous nieces and nephews.

As a child Mitchell attended Macedonia Baptist Church, and, as an adult, he was a member of Freedom Church.
