Panthers lose OT heartbreaker in Waynesboro

Brookhaven 14 OT

A back-and-forth battle for Brookhaven High ended in disappointment Friday at Wayne County. Tied at 14-14 after regulation, the Panthers fumbled on their first possession of overtime.

Wayne County ran in for a touchdown on their first play of OT to get the 20-14 win. Tunovers hurt the Panthers all night. In the second quarter they fumbled on the WC 1-yard line.

BHS led 14-7 at halftime behind two passing scores.

Coach Tucker Peavey’s Ole Brook team drops to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in Region 3-5A play. BHS is back at home next week hosting Hattiesburg High (3-4).

Wayne County moves to 5-1 with the win.

Brookhaven Acad. 42,

Sylva-Bay Academy 14

A four touchdown second quarter pushed Brookhaven Academy out to a 35-7 halftime lead over the visiting Sylva-Bay Academy Saints.

Senior quarterback Tyler Fortenberry scored five touchdowns to lead the Cougars. Fortenberry rushed the ball nine times for 65 yards and one score. Through the air he went 16-of-27 for 253 yards and four scores.

Logan Alexander caught one score, Rayce Stewart snagged another and Trevor Fortenberry caught two touchdowns. Trevor Fortenberry caught seven passes for 148 yards to lead the Cougars.

It was senior night for BA and senior John Rivers Brown scored an 8-yard rushing touchdown for the Cougars.

The BA defense was insatiable as they forced seven turnovers in the game. Carter Smith, Jake Livingston, Easton Boyte and Collin Burns all recovered a fumble apiece. Michael Watts, Smith and Boyte has an interception each as well.

Stewart topped the coach Anthony Hart led Cougars with 6.5 tackles. Sylva-Bay gained 247 yards total in the game.

Brookhaven Academy (6-2) plays its final road game of the season next week at Centreville Academy (7-2).

Poplarville 46,

Lawrence County 13

The powerful Poplarville Hornets moved to 2-0 in Region 7-4A with a home win over the Lawrence County Cougars Friday. PHS led 23-6 at halftime.

Poplarville is now 6-1 on the season. The Cougars and coach Jesse Anderson are 4-3 and 1-1 in division play. LC is on the road next week at Sumrall (5-1).

Richton 36,

Enterprise 8

The Enterprise Yellow Jackets were overwhelmed by the visiting Richton Rebels Friday on Harry Cole Field.

Coach Trey Woodard’s Yellow Jackets (2-5) will be celebrating homecoming next week when they host Salem (0-6).

Raleigh 62,

Wesson 32

The scoreboard in Stone Stadium was lit up like a Christmas tree Friday as Wesson hosted Raleigh for the first ever meeting between the schools.

The Lions from Smith County led 44-24 at halftime in the Region 6-3A matchup. The Cobras (2-5) and coach Jeremy Loy stay in the county next week and travel to face Crystal Springs. Raleigh and coach Ryan Higdon moved to 2-0 in the region and 4-1 overall.
