Mississippi executed David Neal Cox Wednesday by lethal injection. It was the first execution carried out by the state since 2012. Cox, 50, was convicted for the capital murder of his wife Kim, in Sherman in May 2010.

No other execution is currently scheduled, but 35 people remain on death row.

Among them is the latest addition to the list — Willie Cory Godbolt, 39. Godbolt was convicted and sentenced to death in February 2020 for three counts of capital murder. Godbolt, of Bogue Chitto, was convicted for killing a law officer and members of his family during an eight-hour rampage — Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy William Durr, Brenda May, Toccara May, Barbara Mitchell, Jordan Blackwell, Austin Edwards, Ferral Burage and Sheila Burage.

Three others on death row are from Franklin and Copiah counties.

Steven Michael Knox, 53, of Franklin County was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death in September 1999. Knox was found guilty of killing Ella Mae Spears of Liberty by manual strangulation.

On. Oct. 22, 1998, Spears was expected to arrive in Fayette to babysit the children of her niece, Guy Alice Spears Green. When Spears did not arrive as scheduled, Green contacted Spears’ son Albert McKnight, who then contacted Amite County Sheriff Gene McLendon.

McLendon and McKnight went to Spears’ residence, where they found the home unlocked, her purse on a table and her car in the carport. The sheriff discovered stains which appeared to be a blood trail to the rear of the car. Spears’ body was found in the trunk, covered with a quilt.

Ricky Chase, 52, was convicted of capital murder in Copiah County and sentenced to death in February 1990. He was found guilty of the robbery and murder of Elmer Hart outside Hazlehurst.

David Dickerson, 52, was convicted of capital murder in Copiah County and sentenced to death in July 2012. Dickerson was found guilty of shooting his ex-girlfriend several times and stabbing her. He set her Wesson trailer on fire and it later exploded. The victim died after being pulled by neighbors from her home.
