Loyd Star to host Lincoln County tourney

The Lincoln County Basketball Tournament will see all four of the Lincoln County School District programs playing in action spread across Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of next week.

Both Loyd Star teams are coached by Seth Britt and the girls’ team currently has a record of 3-4 on the season. Senior point guard Aubrey Britt leads the team with a 13.5 points per game average. Britt is also pulling down a team best 6.8 rebounds per game while making 3.8 steals and 2.3 assists per night.

The junior duo of Carson Hughey and Alyssa Leggett are averaging 9.4 and 8.3 points per game respectively.

Loyd Star will meet West Lincoln on Tuesday. The girls’ game is slated to start at 7 p.m. and will precede the boys’ contest.

The Loyd Star boys are defending Region 7-2A champs and are off to a 1-7 start thus far in 2021. The lone win for Loyd Star this season was a six-point victory over Wesson.

Junior guard Blake Thornton is averaging 10.5 points per game to lead Loyd Star. Sophomore forward Colby Terrell is averaging a team best 5.4 rebounds per game while also scoring 7.2 points per game.

First year West Lincoln boys’ basketball coach Jay Case and his Bears (0-5) are still looking for their first win of the season.

Fellow first year head girls coach Alissa Adams took her team to the Mississippi Gulf Coast during the Thanksgiving break and played in a two-day tournament hosted by Gulfport High.

Madison-Ridgeland Academy beat West Lincoln 45-24 on Nov. 22 and the following day the Lady Bears dropped a consolation game matchup with Bay High.

The Lady Bears (3-4) are the defending LC Tournament champs.

Bogue Chitto and Enterprise meet in the first set of games on Tuesday.

Both Bogue Chitto teams are under the leadership of first year head coach Marc Howard. The last game before the Thanksgiving break for Bogue Chitto was also matchup at home against Enterprise on Nov. 19.

That night the Lady Jackets moved their record to 4-0 with a 39-34 win over Bogue Chitto in the girls’ game. Senior Natalie Harris led Enterprise with 12 points and freshman Katelynn Malone added 11 points in the win.

Both Enterprise hoops teams are coached by Shane Adams.

The boys’ game on Nov. 19 was won by Bogue Chitto by a 58-51 final score.

The EAC boys are 2-2 on the season while the Bogue Chitto boys are now 3-2 and have won three straight games.

The Bogue Chitto girls are 2-3 overall coming into the LC Tournament.

Bogue Chitto, Loyd Star and West Lincoln will all meet at least two more times this season as they are all members of Region 7-2A and will play each other in a pair of regular season games for division play.

Enterprise is in its first year competing in Region 8-1A, which is also made up of Salem, Richton, Lumberton and Resurrection Catholic.
