Brookhaven’s sales tax receipts were down in October, though up from the previous month.

The City of Brookhaven received $533,900.30 for October. Though down from October 2020’s $536,558.03, September’s receipts were more than $8,000 lower — $525,697.45. The year-to-date total in October was down by nearly $6,000, however — $2.164 million compared to $2.170 million one year ago.

Though the 36th most populous city in the state with 11,785 residents, Brookhaven brought in more sales tax for October than 12 more densely populated cities. Bay St. Louis, Canton, Clarksdale, Clinton, Gautier, Greenville, Greenwood, Grenada, Hernando, Long Beach, Moss Point and Pascagoula each brought in fewer dollars for the month.

Eleven cities had sales tax receipts of more than $1 million in October, including Flowood at $1.173 million. Though the city has fewer than 10,000 residents, it is a popular retail destination in Central Mississippi. The other 10 cities are among the 16 most populous cities — Oxford, $1.066 million; Biloxi, $1.166 million; Pearl, $1.184 million; Olive Branch, $1.188 million; Ridgeland, $1.294 million; Southaven, $1.478 million; Tupelo, $1.937 million; Hattiesburg, $2.241 million; Gulfport, $2.329 million; and Jackson, $2.522 million.

Four towns had sales tax income of less than $100. These were: Paden $59.68 (pop. 104); Eden $66.09 (pop. 133); Gattman $80.85 (pop. 77); and the unincorporated town of Paulding $36.90 (pop. 744).

Sales tax data is provided by the Mississippi Department of Revenue. Sales tax has a three-month cycle. In Month 1, tax is collected by the retailer. In Month 2, tax is reported and paid to MDOR by the retailer. In Month 3, sales tax  income is paid by MDOR to cities. The report is based upon Month 2. All other data is from U.S. Census Bureau.
