Enterprise, Quarterback
A senior, Burns was the heartbeat of Enterprise football for coach Trey Woodard and his staff in 2021. Threw for 838 yards and 10 touchdowns on 60-of-119 passing. A dual-threat, Burns picked up another 438 yards on the ground and scored a team-high 11 rushing touchdowns on 77 carries. Burns only threw three interceptions this season and had a receiving touchdown as well. He rarely came off the field and made 58 tackles, intercepted one pass, caused four fumbles and recovered six fumbles on defense.
Colton Frith
Bogue Chitto, Quarterback
A junior, Frith was able to overcome midseason injuries to have an outstanding year for the Bogue Chitto Bobcats under center. Threw for 914 yards and eight touchdowns on 61-of-96 passing. Carried the ball on the ground 77 times for seven scores and 379 yards as he cued the Bobcat’s misdirection heavy offense. As a defender, Frith picked off two passes and recovered a fumble while making 28 tackles for coach Gareth Sartin’s team.
Carter Holcomb
Loyd Star, Quarterback
A junior, Holcomb emerged as a difference maker at quarterback this season for the Loyd Star Hornets. Holcomb attempted just four passes as a sophomore, but in 2021 he went 58-for-106 through the air for 904 yards and 10 touchdowns. Keyed a move to the double wing offense for coach Brian Ford and rushed for three touchdowns on 29 carries. A standout baseball player, Holcomb showed a knack for throwing the ball on the run like an infielder making a toss to first. Used that motion to hit a receiver for the game winner in a thrilling 26-23 OT win over St. Andrew’s in the season opener.
Will Loy
Wesson, Quarterback
A junior, Loy once again lit up opposing defenses for his head coach and dad, Jeremy. The competition got saltier as the Cobras moved up to the 3A ranks, but Loy still threw for 1,946 yards and 19 touchdowns on 129-of-256 passing. A two-time All-Area selection, he sits at 7,200 passing yards thus far in his varsity career as he’s thrown for 83 touchdowns on 462 completions since taking over at starter early in his freshman season.
Trevor Fortenberry
Brookhaven Academy, Wide Receiver
A junior, more often than not Fortenberry is going to be one of the top two or three athletes on the field regardless of who Brookhaven Academy is facing. Caught 47 passes for 785 yards and eight scores under the direction of first year BA head coach Anthony Hart. Fortenberry already holds an offer from Mississippi Gulf Coast for football and is a three sports athlete for the Cougars. On the defensive side of the ball, he’s a safety/linebacker hybrid that made 54 tackles and picked off three passes. Also recovered a fumble, blocked a kick, blocked a punt and returned an interception 56-yards for a go-ahead score at St. Aloysius.
Taravian Miller
Wesson, Wide Receiver
A junior, Miller stepped up mightily this season after missing parts of his sophomore season to injury. Pulled in 30 passes for 674 yards and seven touchdowns to lead Wesson in all receiving categories while also playing defensive back. The younger brother of former Wesson standouts Anterio Miller and the late Jakerio Miller. Had a season long 66-yard reception against Mize.
Javonta Stewart
Brookhaven High, Wide Receiver
A senior, Stewart was the player who had all eyes on him when Brookhaven High needed a big play or spark in the passing game. Averaged 22.6 yards per catch as he hauled in 31 passes for 701 yards and nine touchdowns. A physical run-blocker on the edge, Stewart brought that same fearlessness to the defensive side of the ball where he led coach Tucker Peavey’s Panthers with three interceptions. Stewart is a repeat selection for the Daily Leader All-Area team.
Dre Ross
Brookhaven High, Athlete
A senior, Ross left it all on the field in 2021 as he did everything in his power to help pass, run and tackle the Panthers to victory. A 3-year starter under center, he went 54-of-119 passing for 775 yards and nine touchdowns. Ross rushed for another nine touchdowns and picked up 811 yards on the ground. A two-time All-Area selection, Ross came in and played more defense than ever as senior — breaking up three passes and making four tackles as a defensive back. Holds an offer from Co-Lin for football while also earning interest from several other schools.
Tommy Broomfield
Lawrence County, Running Back
A senior, Broomfield answered the call to become the featured back for coach Jesse Anderson’s LC Cougars this season. Broomfield carried the ball 95 times for 782 yards and 10 touchdowns to key the Lawrence County double-wing rushing attack. He got just five carries as a junior, but Broomfield had a coming out party against Forrest County AHS to open region play this season. That night he picked up 155 yards and scored two touchdowns on just 12 carries as his production and increased role helped push LC to the 4A playoffs.
Bryce Ford
Loyd Star, Running Back
A junior, Ford began the season with an electric performance against St. Andrew’s and kept his foot on the gas in leading Loyd Star to a 9-2 record in 2021. Averaged 8.0 yards per carry and rushed 100 times for 803 yards and 10 touchdowns for his head coach and dad, Brian. Sure handed, as he mostly played receiver as a sophomore, he caught 17 passes for 223 yards and one score. Came back from a knee injury suffered in the spring and missed two full games due to injury this season as well. Picked off a pass and made 29 tackles as a defensive back.
Xavier Gayton
Brookhaven High, Running Back
A sophomore, Gayten uses an impressive mix of size and speed to lead the Brookhaven High ground game again in his second season as a starter. A two-time All-Area selection, he rushed 143 times for 891 yards and 10 touchdowns. Ran for a season high 206 yards and four touchdowns against South Jones. Gayten checks in at 6-foot, 165-pounds and clocks a 4.62 in the 40-yard dash.
James Goodwin
Loyd Star, Running Back
A sophomore, Goodwin was the Hornet tasked with getting the tough yards when Loyd Star needed them in 2021. A fullback, he rushed 104 times for 963 yards. The Hornets ran their fullback-dive to perfection and Goodwin averaged 9.3 yards per carry. Scored a team-high 11 touchdowns for the Region 7-2A champs. The 5-foot-6, 175-pound Goodwin runs hard and low and dishes out more hits than he takes.
Enrico Price
West Lincoln, Running Back
A senior, Price ends his career as the most productive player to ever carry the football for the West Lincoln Bears. Price rushed for 944 yards this season on 121 touches and scored four touchdowns for West Lincoln coach Brad Bland. He finishes his career as the school’s all-time leading rushing, having picked up 4,651 yards on the ground during his four-year varsity career. Price leaves Flea Hop having scored 41 rushing touchdowns for the green and white and with an 8.3 yards per carry career rushing average.
Julius Smith
Loyd Star, Tight End
A junior, Smith was like a human Swiss Army Knife for the Loyd Star coaching staff this season as he impacted the offense in a variety of ways. After starting his career as a quarterback, he transitioned into an h-back like role as a blocker, ball carrier and pass catcher in 2021. Smith caught 14 passes for 273 yards and three scores. On the ground he carried the ball 83 times for 543 yards and 10 touchdowns for a LS offense that put up big numbers every week.
Rayce Stewart
Brookhaven Academy, Tight End
A junior, Stewart has grown into a solid blocker on the end of the Brookhaven Academy offensive line. He caught 16 passes for 209 yards and three scores for the Cougars this season. A linebacker, Stewart missed the Cougar’s playoff matchup with Kirk Academy and his absence was noticeable for the defense. Finished with 62 tackles, two interceptions and three fumble recoveries as of those recoveries went for a score.
Eli Cupit
Bogue Chitto, Offensive Lineman
A senior, the 6-foot-1, 255-pound Cupit became the guy that Bogue Chitto funneled their running game behind in 2021. A versatile player that could man any spot on the line, but excels as a guard or center, Cupit helped pave the way for a combined 2,258 yards rushing by BC in 2021. Lived the lineman’s dream by scoring a touchdown on a 1-yard carry and also made 84 tackles as a defensive end.
Omarion Diggs
Brookhaven High, Offensive Lineman
A senior, the 6-foot-2, 275-pound Diggs will be a hard one for the Ole Brook coaching staff to replace next season. A two-time Daily Leader All-Area selection, Diggs had some highlight worthy blocks in 2021 as he showed an ability to get to the second level of the defense while blocking as a guard. Was a 3-year starter for Brookhaven High on the line.
Zerian Hudson
Brookhaven High, Offensive Lineman
A senior, the 6-foot-2, 305-pound Hudson has had a career to remember as a 3-year starter for the Brookhaven High Panthers. Picked to represent his state in the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star game, Hudson played left guard for coach Tucker Peavey and his staff. He and his line-mates helped BHS pick up 2,246 yards on the ground in 2021 and finish as runners-up in Region 3-5A.
Jake Livingston
Brookhaven Academy, Offensive Lineman
A senior, the 6-foot, 260-pound Livingston was the captain of a Brookhaven Academy line that had first-year starters in some key spots. Helped lead his team to a District 4-4A title and an 8-3 record in 2021. The versatile Livingston was the backup center for the Cougars while starting his career at tackle and then moving to right guard as a senior. Rarely came off the field as he played defensive tackle too.
Trevor Smith
Loyd Star, Offensive Lineman
A junior, the 6-foot, 245-pound Smith is a fun guy to watch do his job along the Loyd Star offensive line. A guard, you’ll usually find the athletic Smith pulling down the line to hunt his next block. A big part of Loyd Star putting up 2,676 yards rushing and scoring 38 touchdowns on the ground in 2021. Also, an important piece of the defense as an end, he made 46 tackles this season.
