Fewer crashes and fatalities were investigated by Mississippi Highway Patrol Troopers over the 2021 Christmas holiday than in 2020.

Troopers investigated 174 crashes compared to 201 one year ago. One person was killed compared to four people who died in 2020 on state and federal highways in Mississippi.

The 174 wrecks resulted in 30 injuries and the single death, which occurred in Jasper County on Christmas Day.

At approximately 6:36 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 25, MHP Troopers responded the scene of a crash on Hwy. 503. A 2017 Nissan Altima left the highway when the driver, 24-year-old Darion Milsap of Vossburg, lost control and the vehicle hit a trip. MIlsap received fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

Troop M, headquartered in Brookhaven, responded to 11 collisions — none alcohol-related — which resulted in three injuries. Troop M officers issued 484 citations, included 51 for seatbelt or child restraint violations. Troopers made seven DUI arrest and 13 drug arrests, including one felony arrest.

During the 2021 Christmas Holiday Travel Enforcement Period, which concluded Sunday at midnight, MHP issued 6,520 citations and made 146 arrests for impaired driving (DUI). Troopers issued 589 citations for seatbelt and child restraint violations.

In 2020, MHP issued 5,397 citations (342 for seatbelt and child restraint violations) and made 130 DUI arrests.

Troopers assisted 96 motorists during this holiday period compared to 77 one year ago.
