Area schools’ COVID summary, Jan. 3-9

More than 175 students and 17 teachers or staff members have been quarantined in Brookhaven and Lincoln County schools during the first week back on campuses following the Christmas holiday break.

According to reports submitted to the Mississippi State Department of Health, each of the following campuses have reported 1-5 teachers or staff who have tested positive for COVID-19 during the week of Jan. 3-9 — Alexander Jr. High, Brookhaven Elementary, Mamie Martin Elementary, Lipsey Middle, Brookhaven High, Bogue Chitto Attendance Center and Loyd Star Attendance Center. BES reported nine students who tested positive. Mamie Martin reported 1-5, Lipsey reported six, BES reported nine and BHS reported 10. Bogue Chitto reported 1-5 students with positive test results, and Loyd Star reported 13. 

Wesson Attendance Center reported 1-5 teachers or staff with positive test results and four quarantined; and eight students with positive test results, though 131 have been reported quarantined.

In Lawrence County, 1-5 teachers/staff have been reported with positive tests at each of the following: Topeka Tilton, New Hebron, Lawrence County High and in the district office. Monticello Elementary, New Hebron and Topeka Tilton have each reported 1-5 students with positive test results and LCHS has reported 10. District-wide, three staff/teachers and 33 students were quarantined. 

Statewide, among 633 reporting schools, 3,854 students were reported as having tested positive for the coronavirus, as well as 1,541 teachers or staff members. 

Total positive test results statewide for Jan. 3-9 — not just in educational facilities — were 42,666 new results, compared to 47,125 the previous week and 8,262 the week prior. Seventy-one deaths were reported statewide for the week, compared to 88 and 79 in the previous two weeks.
