After two weeks of the 2022 Mississippi Legislative session, nearly 1,000 bills and 43 resolutions have been introduced in the state’s two chambers.

Lincoln County residents want to keep track of what their senator and representatives are working on during this session. Here are the bills introduced or co-authored by Senator Jason Barrett, of Brookhaven.

 

So far in the 2022 Mississippi Legislative session, which reconvened at 4 p.m. Monday after a weekend break, 356 Senate bills have been introduced, including six authored by Sen. Barrett.

Barrett’s bills are as follows:

• SB2154, to authorize the Town of Monticello to levy taxes on gross proceeds of hotel/motel room rentals and restaurant food/beverage sales.
• SB2166, to increase annual salaries of county sheriffs.
• SB2219, to authorize funding to assist the Lawrence County Board of Supervisors in paying costs associated with pavement maintenance for N. A. Sandifer Highway.
• SB2220, to provide funds to assist the Town of Monticello in paying costs associated with construction of an additional bathhouse at Atwood Water Park and the construction of a Hwy. 84 bypass frontage road.
• SB2247, to prohibit persons required to register as sex offenders from being employed as first responders, with advance approval from the director of The Department of Public Safety Sex Offender Registry.
• SB2351, to provide an additional chancellor for the Fifteenth Chancery Court District.

 

Other Senate bills of interest:

• SB2045, creates The Anti-COVID Vaccine Mandate Act, prohibiting discrimination based on a person’s vaccination status or possession of an immunity passport.
• SB2099, to create a minimum wage law with annual incremental increases over a three-year period.
• SB2169, to reinstate the Mississippi Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection Law repealed in 2015, and make inspection periods every other year at a cost of $15.
• SB2285, to reduce punishment for simple possession of a small amount of marijuana to a civil penalty.
• SB2310, to create The Mississippi Civil Rights Act.
• SB2171, to prohibit the teaching of Critical Race Theory in public schools, charter schools or institutions of higher learning.

All of these have been referred to committee.
