Loyd Star sweeps pair of Region 7-2A games

The first division matchup between county rivals Loyd Star and Bogue Chitto saw the Hornets take both games on their homecourt Tuesday. The schools will close the regular season out on Feb. 4 with another set of games at Bogue Chitto.

In the opening girls’ game Tuesday, Loyd Star won 40-39 behind 12 points from senior point guard Aubrey Britt.

The Loyd Star boys jumped out to an 18-4 advantage after one quarter and cruised to a 78-47 win in the finale.

Marc Howard coaches both Bogue Chitto teams while both Loyd Star squads are coached by Seth Britt.

BC built a14-8 first quarter advantage in the girls’ game, before Loyd Star fought back to gain a 23-21 halftime lead.

Britt notched a double-double as she also pulled down 10 rebounds for the Lady Hornets.

Bogue Chitto won the first meeting of the schools on Dec. 12 in the Lincoln County Tournament. That game went to overtime as the Lady Bobcats picked up a 48-47 victory.

Junior forward Marley Britt added nine points for LS while junior point guard Carson Hughey and junior forward Alyssa Leggett chipped in six points each. Senior Madison Falvey scored four points for Seth Britt’s team and senior Emma Falvey rounded out the Loyd Star scoring with three points.

Sophomore center De’Mya Porter scored a game high 13 points to lead Bogue Chitto. Freshman point guard Neeli Magee added eight points for BC. Fayth Magee and Tykiara May added six points each for the Lady Bobcats while Kaitlin Poole scored four points and Destinee Thompson scored two points.

Junior guard Nathan Mills was one of four Loyd Star boys in double figures as he scored a team high 15 points in the second game of the night. Mills stuffed the stat line with 11 rebounds, four assists and one steal.

Sophomore forward Colby Terrell added 14 points for the Hornets while junior guard Julius Smith scored 12 points and senior guard Nathan Calcote chipped in 10 points.

Blake Thornton and Craig Bass scored eight points apiece for Seth Britt’s team and senior Michael Rodriquez scored seven points. Carter Britt and Samuel Redd rounded out the LS scoring with two point each.

Freshman guard Devonta Thompson scored a game high 30 points for the Bobcats in the loss. Thompson nailed four 3-pointers and went 12-of-13 from the free throw line.

Noah Magee, also a freshman, added nine points for Bogue Chitto. Jax Leggett chipped in four points while Shomari Jenkins and Jay May scored two points apiece for Howard’s club.
