Here’s a look at how area MHSAA schools fared in boys’ basketball games played Tuesday in the first round of the various state tournaments.
MHSAA 2A State Tournament
Loyd Star 51,
North Forrest 42
Loyd Star and coach Seth Britt are the lone boys’ basketball team from the area to advance out of the first round of tournament play as the Hornets ground out a close win over visiting North Forrest on Tuesday.
NFHS led 13-11 after the first quarter but were done in by a final eight-minute period that saw LS outscore them 16-8 in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore forward Colby Terrell scored 18 points to lead the Hornets (13-12) in the win. Loyd Star next plays on Saturday as they travel to face Newton High (20-6) at 6 p.m.
Junior guard Julius Smith added 12 points in the win over North Forrest (5-15). Senior Nathan Calcote scored nine points and junior Casen DeHart chipped in four points for LS. Blake Thornton and Michael Rodriquez added three points each while senior forward Craig Bass scored one point.
Newton beat Pisgah 96-47 in the first round. The winner moves on to face the winner between Velma Jackson and Collins.
Collins 89,
Bogue Chitto 66
First year BC head coach Marc Howard and his team end the season with a 13-13 record after dropping their first-round game Tuesday in Covington County at Collins High.
The Bobcats did not have a senior on their roster this season and had a roster loaded with younger players including freshmen Devonta Thompson, Noah Magee, Shakell Jenkins and Tarvas Collins. Those four along with upperclassmen Jay May, Cameron Williams and Shomari Jenkins give Howard an experienced, deep team to lead again in 2022-2023.
MHSAA 4A State Tournament
Pass Christian 60,
Lawrence County 55
A successful season for Lawrence County head coach Pat Bridges and his team came to an end with a close loss to the visiting Pass Christian Pirates (18-10).
LC ends the season with a 18-10 record as they finished in second place in Region 7-4A in both the regular season and post-season tournament to Forrest County AHS. The biggest loss for LCHS will be the graduation of senior point guard Jaheim Ball, but will have much of the roster returning for next season — his 15th as head coach at his alma mater.
Pass Christian moves on to play against Quitman (18-7) today.
MHSAA 5A State Tournament
Wayne County 64,
Brookhaven High 40
One team that will be hit hard by graduation is the Brookhaven High Panthers. Seniors Elijah Kennedy and Demeriuntia Jackson led the Panthers in scoring all season as the team finishes with a 15-11 record.
Kennedy scored eight points at Wayne County on Tuesday while Jackson added seven points. Senior Jacobieus Perkins scored a team high 10 points Tuesday for first year BHS head coach Charlton Grey. 6-foot-7 senior Anthony Sanders added three points while 6-foot-8 senior TaBious Smiley scored two points.
Sophomore Jalen Haliburton added seven points while senior Jalin Brown scored two points and sophomore Nathan Lewis scored one point.
BHS ended the night going 2-of-19 from the 3-point line against Wayne County. The War Eagles (18-9) play at Gautier (19-7) today.
