The identification of a body found in a burned Lawrence County home Saturday has yet to be verified, according to Lawrence County Coroner Sandra Lambert.

Monticello and Lawrence County fire departments responded Saturday to an 8:37 a.m. call to a structure fire on Henry Cox Road. When fire fighters arrived, they found flames coming from the back of the house.

The rear room of the house was fully engulfed. No car was present, giving no indication anyone was home. In zero visibility, fire fighters entered the home through the carport and performed a complete search as they extinguished the blaze. The body of an elderly female victim was discovered in the room where the fire started, according to Lawrence County Fire Coordinator Donnie Weeks.

The victim’s name has not been released, pending verification, according to Lambert.

“I spoke with the medical examiner’s office this morning, and they are still awaiting verification,” the coroner said Tuesday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Lawrence County fire marshal and Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office.

“There appears to be no foul play. Without a complete report, it appears to be incidental,” Weeks said. “We are 99.9 percent sure we know who the victim was, the grandmother who lived in the house, but without an official verification from the M.E., we cannot release her identity.”

Weeks said she was not the only resident of the house, but was the only person home at the time of the fire.
