Official identification is still pending on the victim of a Lawrence County house fire.

Fire departments from Monticello and Lawrence County responded Saturday, March 5, to an 8:37 a.m. call of a structure fire on Henry Cox Road.

When fire fighters arrived, they found flames coming from the rear of the home. As they extinguished the fire, they entered the structure through the carport entrance and performed a complete search in zero visibility, Lawrence County Fire Coordinator Donnie Weeks said.

No vehicles were at the home, indicating the structure was likely empty. However, fire fighters found a body at the spot where the fire was determined to have originated, Weeks said.

Three days later, Lawrence County Coroner Sandra Lambert said the victim had not been verified by the state medical examiner’s office, so the suspected victim’s name has not been released.

Monday, March 14, Sheriff Ryan Everett said 100 percent verification had still not been released by the M.E.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Lawrence County fire marshal and Mississippi State Fire Marshals Office.
