A gas pipeline leak that caused the evacuation of the entire town of Silver Creek has been capped off.
According to Lawrence County Emergency Management Director Tony Norwood, the lead was shut off and bled down.
“The evacuation is over with and everyone may return to their homes,” said Sheriff Ryan Everett. “Thank you all for your cooperation.”
What began as a one-mile radius evacuation around the intersection of Hwy. 43 and Stephens Cemetery Road was extended to the city limits just between 2:30 and 3 p.m. Friday.
Everett said the pipeline was struck and damaged by a piece of equipment, leading to an evacuation out of an abundance of caution. No fire, explosion or injury was reported.
