Canadian National Railroad crews are at work Thursday morning repairing damage to a crossing in downtown Brookhaven.

Broken rails and substructure caused a freight train to derail in downtown Brookhaven Tuesday morning around 8 a.m. A derailment is when the train’s wheels are not evenly and safely connected with the rails.

Portions of the track came apart in the crossing of Monticello Street, causing the train to have to stop until the damage could be fully assessed and properly addressed.

The crossing will remain closed until repairs are completed and it is determined the area is safe for use by motor vehicles. Work is expected to be complete on Friday.
