The Brookhaven School District will not allow the use of medical cannabis on its properties.

The district’s Drug and Alcohol policy has been updated to add the specification for medical marijuana.

“The district does not allow the use of medical cannabis while on district property and during all of the period of time that students are under and subject to the jurisdiction of this school district,” the policy reads.

The policy says it does not apply “to any student who is under the care of a licensed physician and who is taking medication which is under the supervision and direction of such physician.” However, medical marijuana is not included in these exceptions.

The Student Health Services – Medicines policy states, “Medication shall be provided or administered to a student by school personnel ONLY with the written request and consent of the student’s parent/custodian/legal guardian … The district does not allow the use of medical cannabis while on district property and during all of the period of time that students are under and subject to the jurisdiction of this school district.”

Students who violate the policy will be automatically suspended and recommended for expulsion by the superintendent or principal of the school in which the student is enrolled. The policy specifies this is for discipline and protection of students, not “construed to avoid any prosecution under any pertinent criminal statute of the State of Mississippi.”

Adults who violate the policy “shall be issued a citation by a law enforcement officer” and the matter will go to Justice Court.
