MDOT announces winning slogans in 2022 Safety Message Contest

The top three submissions in the Mississippi Department of Transportation’s Safety Message Contest have been decided.

Hundreds of entries were received from June 1 to June 15. MDOT’s traffic safety messages — often related to current events or pop culture — are part of an effort to encourage drivers to change their actions behind the wheel. The messages appear on digital message signs on highways and interstates throughout the state. More than 90 percent of vehicle crashes are caused by driver decisions, such as aggressive driving, driving distracted or impaired, or speeding.

“MDOT’s DMS boards are a fun and unique way to interact with the public while promoting safe driving,” said MDOT Executive Director Brad White. “We received so much positive feedback throughout this contest. Thank you to everyone who participated and submitted their ideas.”

The top winner was submitted by Angie Pope of Kosciusko: “A heavy foot will lead to an empty wallet.”

The other top submissions were, “We get a little bitter when people litter,” submitted by Marie Sefco of Brandon; and “My car doesn’t jiggle or fold because I drive sober,” from Daniel Sumrall of Sumrall.

Motorists will begin seeing the messages on DMS boards beginning Friday, Aug. 5.
