The 5th Squad Veterans Cup two-man scramble golf tournament will be at Wolf Hollow Oct. 1.

The $200 per team fee will help pay bills for Mississippi veterans who need immediate assistance.

Thursday, First Bank market president Jeremy Winborne presented a check to 5th Squad vice president Peter Griffin as sponsor of the event.

“First Bank is glad to partner with 5th Squad in support of our Mississippi veterans,” Winborne said.

Space is limited to 48 teams, so pre-registration is encouraged. Teams can register in person at Wolf Hollow or Ole Brook Country Club, or online at http://www.5thsquad.com/ . The fee can be paid online, or in person the day of the event. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and tee-off is at 9 a.m.

Lunch will be provided. Door prizes and cash prizes will be awarded.

5th Squad formed in January 2016 with four soldiers who wanted to keep their service camaraderie alive and help fellow veterans. Based in Mississippi, the all-volunteer, veteran-run group often finds out about needs through recommendations from the Veterans Administration in Mississippi. But veterans can request help directly from 5th Squad, or someone else can make the request on their behalf, and 5th Squad will do what it can to meet the need.

“If we know of a veteran who is two months behind on his light bill and needs assistance, we’ll step in and pay the bill to help them get caught up,” Griffin said. “We’ve paid rent to keep veterans from becoming homeless, if that’s the danger. If a veteran is homeless, we will pay first and last month’s rent, or a deposit, so that veteran can get off the street and back on their feet.”

The group’s ability to help is limited by the funds it is able to raise. That’s why events like the Veterans Cup are so important, Griffin said, and why he’s grateful for the sponsor and participants.

“This is all made possible by the generosity of First Bank,” Griffin said. “So come have a fun day with golf and support a good cause.”
