With the General Election approaching in November, candidates are also approaching deadlines to submit their campaign finance reports.

Nonpartisan judicial candidates must submit their reports by 5 p.m. Oct. 10. All others have until 5 p.m. Nov. 1. Reports must be submitted by any candidate or political committee that has accepted contributions or made expenditures for the election.

On the ballot in Lincoln County are eight offices, only two of which are contested — District 3 U.S. Representative and Mississippi Court of Appeals District 4, Position 1.

The incumbent representative is Michael Guest (R-Miss.), who will face Democrat challenger Shuwaski Young. The incumbent Appeals Judge is Virginia Carlton, who will face challenger Bruce W. Burton. Judges are nonpartisan seats.

As of Thursday, Sept. 22, neither Young nor Carlton had filed financial reports. Guest’s latest filing was Jan. 28, 2022, and Burton’s latest filing was July 8, 2022.

Guest’s report listed his beginning 2021 cash on hand as $24,815.17. He reported no contributions and $400 in disbursements, leaving a year-end cash on hand balance of $24,415.17.

Burton’s report listed a prior balance of $0, with no contributions and no disbursements. Ending cash on hand was $0.

 

Unopposed races

The races on the November ballot in which each candidate is unopposed are:

• Circuit Court Judge — incumbent Michael Taylor

• Circuit Court Judge — incumbent David Strong Jr.

• Chancery Court Judge — incumbent Joseph Durr

• County Election Commissioner District 2 — incumbent Janice Hart Haley

• Brookhaven School District Board of Trustees — incumbent Erin W. Smith

• Lincoln County School Board — Joe Portrey

Judge Durr is the only one of these listed on the Secretary of State’s website to have filed a campaign finance report as of Thursday, Sept. 22. His latest report was filed May 5, 2022. On that report, Durr listed a prior balance of $0, with no contributions and no disbursements. Ending cash on hand was $0.

 

Voter registration, absentee voting

Monday, Oct. 10 is deadline for voter registration, in person or postmarked, to be able to vote in the Nov. 8 general election. Absentee voting ends at 12 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5. Weekend absentee voting will also be available Saturday, Oct. 29.
