Forestry and Lincoln County authorities remind residents that the area is still under a burn ban.

“You can be ticketed and you will be held responsible for any damages if the fire runs off your property,” said Brookhaven-Lincoln County Emergency Management Director Chris Reid. “It doesn’t matter if it burns grass, trees, hay or other property, you will be help responsible.”

Reid said Emergency Management, the Mississippi Forestry Commission and county volunteer fire departments have fought an average of two or three fires every day this week.

Not enough rainfall has accumulated to help prevent the spread of wildfires, and the ban will last until at least Oct. 31.

“The fires may not start big, but they spread fast because of how dry everything is,” Reid said.

At least one property owner was ticketed Friday, and the Loyd Star Volunteer Fire Department responded Thursday to a fire that consumed three vehicles.

“Please don’t burn right now,” a message from the department on social media read. “The brush is still very dry; fires spread quickly and get out of control.”
