Community-wide Rector’s BBQ is Saturday

On Saturday, Oct. 29, the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer will host a community-wide event in Trinity Park with live music, kid friendly games and plenty of food.

“It’s one of our favorite activities, to come together and share a meal,” said Rev. Andrew McLarty, rector of Redeemer. Magnolia Blues BBQ is providing the sides, while Rev. McLarty, recently featured in Brookhaven Magazine, is gleefully cooking the pork.

“I get to use barbecue as a means of spreading love, and that’s a sweet gig,” said McLarty.

Rector’s BBQ Festivities will kick off at 11 a.m. and run until 1 p.m. Barbecue plate tickets are on sale for $10, and a bake sale will be held that day. The events will also feature a Drawdown with the opportunity to win cash prizes. Each ticket will be $100, and only 150 tickets will be sold. The winners will be the last three names drawn that day. Third prize will take home $500. Second prize will win $1,000, and first prize will walk away with $2,500. Music will be provided by Blake Scafidel and the Rainer Brothers.

Trinity Park was completed in 2012 after a generous donation from a late church member, Bud Urban. Over the years, it has welcomed many Brookhavenites from those searching for a walking path in downtown Brookhaven to music and art events hosted by Shaw Furlow and the Brookhaven Regional Arts Guild.

Redeemer also helps provide community outreach through its food pantry, bill assistance for those in need, and most popularly with its thrift shop Angel’s Attic.
