Local XC teams gearing up for run at MHSAA state championships

The final meet of the season is approaching for local cross-country teams as the MHSAA will hold championship races at Choctaw Trails in southwest Jackson beginning on Saturday.

On Saturday, Nov. 5 the state championship races for the 2A, 4A and 6A classifications will be held.

The 2A girls race begins at 3 p.m. on Saturday and will be followed by the boys’ race at 3:40 p.m.

One local team that comes into the state meet with momentum is the Loyd Star boys team coached by Russell Cruise. The Hornets won their regional last week that was also held on the 5K course at Choctaw Trail.

Sophomore Gauge Montgomery was the overall first place finisher in the event as he finished with a time of 18 minutes and one second on the course. Hayden Skates of West Lincoln was the second-place finisher with a time of 20:44.

Freshman Cooper Creel was the fifth overall finisher and the second Loyd Star finisher with a time of 21:53. West Lincoln senior Zach Reed finished sixth overall with a 22:08 time.

Parker Satterfield, a Loyd Star eighth grader, finished with a time of 22:42 for seventh place. Eighth grader Caleb Wroten of West Lincoln was the eighth-place finisher with a time of 24:16.

Other Loyd Star racers were seventh grader Carson Sellers (25:02), Riley Friloux (26:03), Brennon Reid (28:55), Turner Britt (28:59) and Chandler Creel (30:05).

Other West Lincoln racers were freshman Zachary Fuller (25:09), eighth grader Ethan Price (25:11), eighth grader Brice Spring (26:05), senior Connor Johnson (27:30), junior Ryan Purdy (28:02) and eighth grader Aden Purvis (31:14).

West Lincoln, coached by Jay Case, was the only team to compete in the girls’ competition along with two runners from Heidelberg High.

Junior Alaina Mathis won first overall with at time of 26:55 for the Bears.

Other finishers for West Lincoln were sophomore Yedith Uribe (27:43), senior Cara Jarancik (28:00), senior Kate McClatchy (30:28), eighth grader Palyn Smith (32:33), eighth grader Lexi Furr (32:53), freshman Kaleigh Davis (33:02), freshman Jaylee Nations (33:27) and sophomore Anna Mckenzie (34:01).

The 1A, 3A, and 5A championships will be held Monday, Nov. 7 at Choctaw Trails.

The 5A girls will run first with a start time slated for 11 a.m. and to be followed by the 5A boys at 11:40 a.m.

The BHS girls’ varsity team and coach Shannon Knott are coming off a strong showing at their Super Regional last week at Choctaw Trails.

Senior Ramie Stovall led the team with a 20:39 finish that earned her first overall. Following for BHS were eighth grader Isabella Iles (21:23), sophomore Annabelle Summers (22:26), junior Jasmine Robertson (22:49), sophomore Ella Thompson (23:04), sophomore Natalie McKinney (23:48), eighth grader Abby Slay (23:50), sophomore Ariyana Graham (24:44) and junior Chrisiyona Quarles (27:00).

Sophomore Bram Wolfe was the top finisher for the BHS boys’ team with a time of 17:49. Other finishers for the BHS boys were eight grader Isaac Iles (18:37), eighth grader Coleman Knott (19:19), sophomore Charlie Adams (19:24), freshman Isaac Stovall (20:39), sophomore Braden Johnson (20:55) and sophomore Nathaniel Bordelon (23:00).

Top finishers in Wesson during the Super Regional at Choctaw Trails included junior Preston Selman (13th overall) and junior Aiden Brice (15th overall) in the boys’ race and seventh grader Eden Hall (15th overall) and senior Hannah Meredith (19th overall) in the girls’ race.

Wesson, coached by Vance Windom, will run in the 3A girls race that begins at 1 p.m. on Nov. 7 and the boys’ team will follow in a race that begins at 1:40 p.m.
