Heidelberg 34, Bogue Chitto 14

The visiting Heidelberg Oilers (5-5) built a 20-0 first half lead after three second quarter touchdowns in eliminating the homestanding Bogue Chitto Bobcats (7-4) Friday on Troy Smith Field.

Heidelberg moves on to face Philadelphia (5-5) next week in the second round of the MHSAA 2A state playoffs. Philadelphia eliminated Pelahatchie (2-9) with a 41-21 win on Friday.

BC coach Gareth Sartin and his squad finished second behind East Marion in Region 7-2A. Amite County, the fourth placed team from Region 7-2A, was beaten 41-0 by Mize on Friday in the opening round of the playoffs.

East Marion (6-4) was the lone Region 7-2A team to win on Friday in the first round. The Eagles beat up on North Forrest by a 35-7 final and will play Lake (6-4) in the second round.

Wesson 34, Union 28 OT

The Wesson Cobras (6-5) are on to the second round of the MHSAA 3A playoffs after going on the road and knocking off the Union Yellow Jackets (8-3) on Friday.

Next up for Wesson is a second-round pairing with Tylertown, a team the Cobras beat 49-48 on the final play of the game, back on Aug. 26 in the season opener. Tylertown beat Perry Central 40-21 in the first round at home on Friday and the Cobras will host the second-round matchup between the schools.

Union came in as the no. 1 seed out of Region 5-3A and quickly jumped up 7-0 on Friday over Wesson.

The Cobras pulled within 7-6 when O’Mari Johnson scored on a 5-yard touchdown run.

Coach Jeremy Loy’s Cobras then went ahead when his son and quarterback Will found Wyatt Garrett for a 40-yard touchdown pass to make the Wesson lead 12-7.

Union answered with a 60-yard rushing touchdown and converted PAT kick that made the score 14-12 in the first quarter.

Another Johnson rushing score had Wesson ahead 18-14 going into the second quarter.

The pace slowed in the second quarter and a Wesson field goal was the only scoring as the teams went to halftime with WAC up 21-14.

The Yellow Jackets of Union scored in the third quarter to make it a 21-20 ballgame but missed the PAT kick following the touchdown.

The home team then went ahead 28-21 in the fourth quarter before Wesson sprung its comeback.

A rushing touchdown by Will Loy tied the game at 28-28 with six minutes to go and that score held to send the game to overtime.

In the OT session, the Cobras got the game winner on a 10-yard pass from Loy to senior receiver Justin Hailey.

Collins 39, Loyd Star 26

The Loyd Star Hornets (7-4) fought for all four quarters but couldn’t overcome the home team from Collins High (4-7) Friday on the road in the first round of the MHSAA 2A playoffs.

Coach Brian Ford’s team came in as the no. 3 seed from Region 7-2A and faced a Collins team that got second in it’s division by beating Heidelberg 30-27 last week.

Collins moves on to next face the powerhouse Scott Central Rebels (9-2) in the second round.

Mount Olive 50, Enterprise 24

The visiting Mount Olive Pirates (5-5) were too much for the Enterprise Yellow Jackets (1-9) Thursday in the regular season finale for both teams on Harry Cole Field.

Enterprise coach Trey Woodard and his team got 117 yards passing from sophomore quarterback Landon McNickles. Senior lineman Travis DeLaughter also got to complete the lineman’s dream by completing one pass for 39 yards.

On the ground, McNickles rushed 12 times for 47 yards and three scores. Sophomore Payton Kyzar added a rushing touchdown as well. Sophomore Daylan Barden caught two passes for 81 yards and freshman AJ Raiford hauled in two passes for 57 yards. 

Sophomore Jamie Fulgham led the EAC defense with 14 total tackles. Sophomore Michael Magee snatched an interception and caused a fumble that was recovered by Fulgham.

The defending 1A state champs from Bay Springs (10-1, 7-0) finished in first place in Region 4-1A, of which Enterprise is a member. Second place went to Taylorsville (7-4, 6-1) and third place went to Lumberton (5-6, 5-2).

There was a battle for the fourth-place position and the final playoff spot in the region and itw as won by Resurrection Catholic (6-4, 3-4) of Pascagoula. The rest of the region included Mount Olive (5-5, 3-4), Richton (4-7, 3-4), Enterprise (1-9, 1-6) and Salem (0-11, 0-7).
