Several area high school basketball teams will be on the court Monday and Tuesday in the traditional Thanksgiving week tournaments hosted by Brookhaven Academy and Lawrence County High School.

Action at Brookhaven Academy begins on Monday, Nov. 21, at 10:45 a.m. with a girls’ game between Adams County Christian School and East Rankin Academy. The same two schools will then meetup in a boys’ game.

At 1:15 p.m., the girls’ teams from Cathedral School and Presbyterian Christian will tangle in a game that that’ll precede a boys’ pairing between the same two schools.

Copiah Academy and Columbia Academy are set to meet next for two games, starting with the girls’ matchup at 3:45 p.m.

The two home teams from BA are scheduled to tangle with Tri-County Academy in a pair of games to cap the day. The girls’ contest between the schools is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m. with the boys’ matchup to follow.

It’ll be the second time for the Brookhaven Academy girls to play Tri-County this season as the Cougars absolutely demolished TCA 62-6 earlier this week.

The better matchup for a fan viewing experience should be on Tuesday, Nov. 22. That’s when BA will host their northern neighbors from Gallman, Copiah Academy.

The girls’ matchup between the schools is scheduled to start at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday and will be followed by a boys’ game.

The BA girls’ team and coach Ron Kessler are off to a 6-2 start this season. The Cougars got some revenge after losing earlier in the season to Simpson Academy by beating SA in Mendenhall in the rematch last week.

The other early season loss for BA was a 4-point defeat at the hands of Madison-Ridgeland Academy.

“We had a let down defensively as a team in our losses against MRA and Simpson,” said Kessler. “We took the week of practice after those two losses to really tighten up our focus and effort on the defensive end. We played the best four quarters of basketball that I’ve had a team play in my four years at the school when we beat Simpson 60-35 last week.”

The full Tuesday slate starts at 10:45 a.m. with a girls’ game between East Rankin Academy and Cathedral School. The two schools will also meet in a boys’ matchup that’s scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.

Presbyterian Christian and Adams County Christian School are scheduled to meet up in a pair of games with the girls’ contest getting things started at 1:15 p.m.

Columbia Academy, coached by former longtime BA head coach Dale Watts, will take on Tri-County Academy for two games. The girls’ matchup between the schools is scheduled to start at 3:45 p.m.

 

Three Lincoln County based schools playing Monday at LC Tourney

Loyd Star fans and supporters will get some basketball with their breakfast on Monday at the Lawrence County Tournament as the Hornets are up first in a day packed with games.

The LS girls’ team will tip off at 10 a.m. with a matchup against the Parklane Academy Pioneers.

The Parklane girls’ team is coached by longtime LC head coach Vicki Rutland. Loyd Star is under the direction of first year head coach Russell Cruise.

Loyd Star has started the season with some close losses in putting together a 2-4 record. The Hornets beat Richland and Salem in blowouts and lost to Lawrence County (by five), Wesson (by six), North Pike (by four) and Franklin County (46-36).

The Loyd Star boys’ team and coach Seth Britt are 6-2 thus far in 2022 with losses to Lawrence County and Franklin County.

Former Southwest MS CC assistant coach Alex Ainsworth is in his first year as head boys’ basketball coach at Parklane.

Junior forward Colby Terrell has been powering the Loyd Star offense by averaging 22 points per game this season. Terrell has also been pulling down 10 rebounds per game in the early season.

The boys’ game between LS and Parklane is scheduled to tip off at 11:30 a.m.

North Pike and Wayne County meet up in the second set of games on Monday at Lawrence County. The girls’ game between those schools is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. and to be followed by the boys’ contest.

The Brookhaven High Panthers will take on the Jefferson Davis County Jaguars in two games that begin with the girls’ playing at 4 p.m.

The BHS girls and coach Preston Wilson are off to a 5-1 start with their lone loss of the season coming to Germantown.

Wilson’s team is a deep group that’s led by senior guard Angel “Cookie” Wilkinson and 6-foot-3 senior post player Leah Wilcher. Senior guard Alexis Kelly is another leader for a BHS group that presses, runs the court and shoots from deep with confidence.

The Brookhaven High boys’ team and coach Charlton Grey are 2-3 thus far in 2022.

The finale of day one has the host Lawrence County teams playing the Bogue Chitto Bobcats. The girls’ matchup between those schools will begin at 7 p.m.

The Bogue Chitto girls are 2-0 this season after beating West Marion and Wesson and the boys’ team is also off to a 2-0 start for coach Marc Howard.

The Tuesday schedule in Monticello begins with Parklane taking on North Pike in two games. The girls’ game begins at 1 p.m.

BHS is back in action on Tuesday against Wayne County with the girls’ game tipping off at 4 p.m.

Lawrence County wraps up the two-day tournament with two games against Jefferson Davis County. The girls’ game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

The teams met earlier this season with JDC taking a 55-44 win in the boys’ game and also taking the girls’ contest by a 52-39 final score.
