Dr. Hugh Carroll Smith

Dr. Hugh Carroll Smith passed away peacefully at the Regency House in Alexandria, LA on Friday, November 4, 2022.
Hugh was born and raised in Brookhaven, MS, to the late Hugh & Ernestine Smith on January 8, 1943, as an only child. He is survived by his childhood cousins, Betty Jernagan Commins & Beverley S. Elebash of Pensacola, FL; Donna Wilkerson and Tommy Alderman of Brookhaven, MS; Gaye Ragland & Susan Lofton of Madison, MS; Sheila Dunigan of Zachary, LA; Karen Thompson Eads of Durango, CO; Jerry James of Orlando, FL; Miller Hamill & Mitchell Smith of Brookhaven, MS; aunt, Libby Price King of Altamonte Springs, FL; and his lifelong friend and companion, Gloria Shelby, and her family.
Hugh graduated from Brookhaven High School and earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Biology at Mississippi State University in Starkville, MS. He played in the marching band both in high school and at MSU as a clarinetist. He began his teaching career at Louisiana State University, Alexandria (LSUA) where he taught biology and zoology. He served as Interim Head of the Division of Sciences and Department Chair for Biological Classes. The LSU Board of Supervisors named him Professor Emeritus. He was also a member of the Alexandria Symphonic Orchestra for many years.
He and his companion, Gloria, traveled extensively all over the world and enjoyed their trips to the fullest.
Hugh will be cremated and his wish was to have his ashes scattered in rivers throughout the world and in Colorado among the wild flowers.
