Lawrence County schools under lockdown

Just after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, all Lawrence County School District campuses were placed under lockdown.
The following statement was released by Superintendent John Daley:
“Out of an abundance of caution due to an incident off school grounds in the Town of Monticello involving gunfire, all district campuses are currently under lockdown. All campuses are secure and the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Further information regarding the lockdown will be published as it is received.”
“Upon consulting with local law enforcement, all district campuses will remain on lockdown until dismissal. Students and staff are secure on their campuses. Plans are to dismiss at regular dismissal times for each campus.”
Monticello Police Chief David Stanley said the gunfire was at the Westover Apartment Complex on Robert Charles Drive. Stanley and other officers are on the scene gathering evidence and talking to potential witnesses. The incident remains under investigation.
