As of midweek, 48 states were at a critical or high overall risk level for COVID, flu, cold or other illness, according to HealthWeather.us.

The only other two states — Louisiana and Alabama — were at a moderate level. No states were classified as low risk.

Mississippi was high risk overall for illness. With 20.4 new COVID-19 cases reported daily per 100,000 residents, the COVID risk was considered moderate and a stable trend.

The Magnolia State also reported 9.6 percent of tests for influenza were positive (high risk), and less than 1 percent of residents were sick with stomach bug, cold, strep, or other common illness (low risk).

With nine or fewer new COVID-19 cases reported daily per 100,000 residents, Wyoming, Alaska and Vermont were low-risk for the coronavirus.

With 29-31 new cases per 100,000, New Jersey, New York and California were all high risk for COVID-19. Trends for all 50 states were stable.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 18 million people have had the flu this season, and 23,000 deaths have been linked to the respiratory illness.
