There will be lots of changes in store for Wesson football ahead of the 2023 season.

The Cobras will be replacing a 4-year starter at quarterback and will be joining a new 3A region along with Franklin County, Jefferson County, Port Gibson and South Pike.

Despite the question marks, expect coach Jeremy Loy to have his Cobras ready to go when the season opener rolls around.

In 2022, Loy and Wesson won the first 3A playoff game in program history and were eliminated by their region foes and eventual state champs from Raleigh High in the MHSAA 3A third round.

For his leadership, Loy has been named the 2022 Daily Leader All-Area Coach of the Year.

The Cobras finished 7-6 and played in perhaps the toughest 3A region in the state with Raleigh and state semifinalist Hazlehurst sitting atop the division.

The season began for Wesson in epic fashion, with a 49-48 win over Tylertown on 2-point conversion with no time remaining.

The 2022 version of Cobra football could have easily folded during the fourth quarter of that game with Tylertown and accepted defeat.

Cramps had the Wesson coaching staff limited to 16 healthy players as THS had all the momentum after trailing early.

The Cobras fought until the end, getting the winning conversion when running back Lucas McRee handed the ball off to O’Mari Johnson just before being tackled to end the game.

That identity of not giving up until the final horn is one that Wesson continued to embrace as the season went on.

When the MHSAA 3A playoffs began, Wesson was the no. 4 seed from their division and traveled to play at Union High, a team that had won its region, in the opening round.

The Cobras trailed 28-21 in the fourth quarter of that game, before battling back to gut out a 35-28 win.

A 7-6 overall record, with two of those losses coming to Raleigh and another to Hazlehurst — that doesn’t just feel like a flash-in-the-pan season for the Cobras and Loy.

Despite graduating a senior class that includes his son, Will, a quarterback who threw for over 100 touchdowns in his career, look for Wesson to battle for more 3A postseason wins next season under the leadership of Loy.
