Here’s a look at how area teams have fared in the last week of high school basketball action.

Region 7-2A

The West Lincoln girls’ team is 19-1 and has wrapped up another first-place finish atop Region 7-2A after getting a 55-44 home win against Bogue Chitto on Tuesday.

The Bears will step outside division play to host Pisgah (12-9) on Jan. 31 in Jack Case Gymnasium. WL wraps the regular season on Feb. 3 at Amite County.

West Lincoln will also be the host site of the upcoming Region 7-2A tournament and Bogue Chitto (12-8) will be the likely No. 2 seed behind the homestanding Bears, setting up a possible third meeting between the teams for the championship.

On the boys’ side of the standings, Bogue Chitto (16-4) appears to be in the driver’s seat for the top seed with a 6-0 division mark.

The semifinal pairings could end up having Amite County and Bogue Chitto taking each other on in one boys’ game and East Marion and Loyd Star meeting in the other boys’ game as the margin between the No. 1 spot and the No. 4 seed hasn’t been much this season in a competitive race.

BC will host Amite County on Jan. 31 and then close the regular season on the road with a trip to play at Loyd Star on Feb. 3.

Region 5-5A

Brookhaven High is now locked in as the No. 2 seed of its region in girls’ basketball. The Panthers are 21-3 overall but went 0-2 against their rivals from West Jones in division play.

WJ locked up top seed in the region tournament with a 60-43 win at BHS on Thursday. West Jones moved to 21-2 with the win.

BHS will put a cap on the regular season by hosting Ridgeland High on Jan. 31 in Sinclair Gymnasium.

West Jones will also have the advantage of hosting the Region 5-5A Tournament after the conclusion of the regular season.

Coach Preston Wilson’s girls’ team will face either Florence or Natchez in the semifinal and with a win, will likely get a third shot at West Jones for the region title.

The boys’ division of Region 5-5A is closer with Florence leading at the moment with a 4-1 record. Natchez is 3-2 and Brookhaven High is 2-3 at press time. West Jones is the fourth placed team with a 1-4 division record.

On Thursday, West Jones escaped BHS with a 90-86 overtime win. The Panthers also dropped a close loss last week, 62-61 at Florence.

Region 8-1A

Enterprise will host the upcoming Region 8-1A tournament that will see teams from Lumberton, Richton, Salem and Resurrection Catholic joining the host school.

EAC is currently fourth in the girls’ division and if that remains the case, they’ll meet top seeded Lumberton in the semifinals.

Enterprise will host Lumberton on Feb. 2 and then host Salem on Feb. 3 to wrap up the regular season.

On the boys’ side, the Yellow Jackets and coach Shane Adams are sitting in fourth place out of five teams. Resurrection leads the boys’ division with a 5-1 league mark.

Region 7-3A

Franklin County will be the host of the upcoming Region 7-3A tournament that will have FC, Hazlehurst, Wesson, Port Gibson and Wilkinson County competing for a title.

Wesson is set to travel to Port Gibson on Jan. 31 and then finish the regular season with a road game at Wilkinson County on Feb. 3.

Port Gibson is the top seed on the boys’ side of the division with a current mark of 7-0. In the girls’ race, Wesson is second behind Franklin County with a division sheet that currently sits at 6-1.

Region 7-4A

Brooklyn, Mississippi and Forrest County AHS will be the site of the Region 7-4A tournament for FCAHS, Lawrence County, Sumrall, Columbia, Purvis and Poplarville.

Coach Pat Bridges and his LC boys’ team are currently in second place behind top seeded Forrest County.

LC will host Forrest County on Jan. 30 and then play at Purvis on Jan. 31 and at Columbia on Feb. 3 to end the regular season.

The LC girls and coach Candice McDuffey are also in second place at press time, behind the region leading team from Columbia High.
