JACKSON — National Weather Service Jackson Office reports two tornadoes touched down in Lawerence County in the outbreak of storms Wednesday. One of these tornadoes was an EF-1 with maximum wind speeds reaching 100 mph and was near Givens Road according to a preliminary report.

The cyclone touched down in the Tilton Community at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and traveled .19 miles with a max width of 50 yards before lifting up at 7:31 p.m.

Lawerence County’s other tornado was an EF-0 and had maximum wind speeds of 70 mph. It touched down in south Lawerence County near Tilton and lasted one minute. This tornado touched down at 7:22 p.m. and lasted until 7:23 p.m. Wednesday. It took a .68 mile long path and had a maximum width of 75 yards according to the preliminary report.

NWS Jackson reports five tornadoes touched down in Mississippi during the storm Wednesday and nine have touched down in Mississippi since Jan. 1, 2023. No one was injured or killed in those tornadoes.

More severe storms are in the forecast for next week. NWS Jackson forecasts late Wednesday and Thursday to see a slight risk of severe storms capable of producing tornadoes. The severe weather is several days away so more information will be available on Monday.

NWS Jackson’s Brandon/Jackson radar was supposed to go offline for a major upgrade which would last two weeks on February 13. The project has been postponed until Friday due to the threat of severe storms Wednesday and Thursday.

Saturday has a 50 percent chance of rain and the high will be 49 degrees.
