Severe weather expected tonight, Friday morning

Severe weather is expected to impact the majority of Mississippi Thursday night into Friday, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

MEMA issued a weather alert Thursday morning, warning severe storms are likely to begin overnight into the morning hours.

MEMA advises residents identify a safe gathering spot with family prior to going to bed Thursday, and have weather alerts turned to their loudest setting.

Lincoln County is categorized as “slight risk,” with severe storms possible, including damaging winds up to 60 mph and possible tornadoes. Lawrence, Walthall, Pike, Amite and Franklin are under the same risk level.

A large portion of Jefferson and Copiah counties are under an “enhanced risk” — severe storms are likely, with damaging winds up to 70 mph. Tornadoes are possible, and a strong tornado cannot be ruled out.
