BROOKHAVEN — Enterprise batted through the order and put up 12 runs in the third inning to spark a 19-3 win over Brookhaven Monday night. Brookhaven had a 2-0 lead after two innings but could not find a way to get out of the third inning. 

Freshmen Terra Vining and Hailey Reeves had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Enterprise offense. Senior Mallory Honea had one hit and an RBI and enjoyed watching the rally from the dugout as she talked to an assistant coach. 

Brookhaven went through three pitchers in the inning and the Yellow Jacket’s dugout grew louder with each run scored. Honea said the team was just having a fun inning. 

“We are a big family and are just having fun and when we have fun we put up big runs. It is just about having fun,” Honea said. “We love each other as a team and have fun. It is all about having fun for us. The coaches help us out a lot. They pump us up a lot on and off the field.”

She had one of the dirtiest uniforms on the night thanks to some heads up base running. In the fifth and final inning, Honea slid head first into second base following an errant throw and had a face full of dirt. It didn’t bother her because her adrenaline was flowing. 

Enterprise’s 19-3 win over 5A Brookhaven is an important win. The Yellowjackets are a 1A school with goals of being number one in district and going to playoffs. They will have to keep up playing well to accomplish those goals which comes back to hitting the ball well and having a strong defense.

Enterprise had 11 hits in the win and forced 11 errors by having pressure on the base paths. Pitcher Zoey Dean threw five innings and gave up just one hit, three runs and struck out four batters. 

One of the best defensive plays of the night was made by second baseman Miranda Anderson as she robbed Brookhaven of a base hit and turned a double play on a sharply hit ball. She leapt up into the air to make the stop. Honea watched from center field. 

“I was thinking she has this. I just believe we have this,” Honea said. “If we have two hits and the ball is hit to someone else I start running towards the dugout. I have that much faith in my teammates.”

Her older brother, mom and step-dad have coached her through softball. Honea plans to play softball at Coahoma Community College after she graduates and study to be a paramedic. 

“I’m excited. It is a small school like this school. The coach has talked to me, she likes my speed and I’m ready for it,” Honea said. “I want to help people as a paramedic and I want the adrenaline.” 

Woes continue for Ole Brook

Brookhaven senior Maggie Reynaud was the only player to have a hit for the Panthers. Nine Panthers were left on base in the contest. Of the 19 runs given up, just seven runs were earned with the defense committing 11 errors. 

Angel “Cookie” Wilkinson is one of two seniors on the squad. Her nickname came from her brother and it has stuck with her throughout her school years. 

In one hand, she had a bag of ice in to alleviate any discomfort. A competitor, she is not a fan of losing and a 1-9 start her senior year is far from ideal. 

“We have to get here and work. We can’t just act like we want it. We have to be mentally prepared for the game,” Wilkinson said. “I don’t know when it will sink in our head. We just have to get it. We are just a young team with young minds. We have to listen to our coaches.” 

She has played softball for five years now but growing up she was more of a baseball player. At Ole Brook, she fell in love with softball and the girls who were older than her. They were committed and did what they had to do to win games. 

Reynaud and Wilkinson are trying to steer the ship in the right direction. 

“We are down so much. It is just getting tiring,” Wilkinson said. “We got to play for the people beside us. We are trying.” 

Wilkinson plans to play college basketball after graduation and will make her decision official on March 17th. She would like to do elementary education but is also interested in coaching. 

Brookhaven will have a chance to turn things around against Bogue Chitto tomorrow night. First pitch is at 6:15 p.m. in Bogue Chitto.
