Lincoln County residents are invited to bring hazardous waste to the Lincoln County Unit Facility located at 1211 Old US 51 N in Brookhaven. It will be Saturday, March 11 from 8 a.m. until noon. 

Bob Knight, coordinator of litter and solid waste pickup for Lincoln County, said it is the first time the hazardous waste day has returned to Lincoln County since 2020. 

The one day event is free and open to the public. Items not accepted are commercial waste, explosives, radioactive materials, materials with PCBs, syringes, ammunition, lab chemicals or prescription drugs. 

Items which will be accepted include paint, aerosols, cleaners, ammonia, anti-freeze, batteries, brake fluid, chlorine bleach, pool chemicals, glass cleaner, disinfectants, drain openers, furniture polish, gasoline, scrap metal, herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, tub and tile cleaner, water seal, wood finish, fertilizers, lighter fluid, paint thinner, tires, fluorescent light bulbs, electronic waste, used motor oil, propane cylinders and appliances. For the public’s safety, do not exit your vehicle when dropping off these items. Scrap metals and tires need to be kept separate from chemical waste. 

“It is a way for residents to get rid of hazardous substances that can’t be thrown away. It usually has to be disposed of by an incinerator,” Knight said. “It costs a pretty penny and typically keeps us busy for four hours. Whenever we get a grant we are able to do the hazardous waste day. We had not had a grant in several years.”
