Baseball roundup: Brookhaven Academy bounces back with Hartfield win

Here’s a look at how area high school baseball teams have fared in recent action.

 

Brookhaven Academy 6, Hartfield Academy 2

Brookhaven Academy snapped a five-game losing skid on Saturday with a win in Flowood over Hartfield Academy. Hartfield won 12-2 when the teams met on Feb. 28 and had also won 12-2 when the schools played on Feb. 23.

BA jumped out to a 3-2 lead after the first inning and padded that advantage with one run in the sixth inning and two more runs in the top of the seventh. The Cougars outhit the Hawks 8-4 in the win.

Senior Easton Boyte went the full seven innings for BA on the mound and struck out 10 while walking just one batter. Boyte scattered four hits and needed just 89 pitches to get through the game.

It was the first loss of the season for Hartfield (12-1). Brookhaven Academy was coming off two losses earlier in the week (12-3, 3-1) to Simpson Academy.

Trevor Fortenberry, Judson Griffin and Matt Newman all hit a double apiece for the Cougars at the plate. Newman drove in three RBIs and Griffin drove in two runs as well. Sam Stevens also hit safely for BA.

The Cougars (5-9) and coach Caleb Upton will host Bowling Green School on Friday for a district doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Williams-Gillis Ballpark.

 

Brookhaven High 11, Salem 1

Coach Matt White and his Brookhaven High Panthers spotted visiting 1A Salem a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Saturday at Moyer Field.

After that, it was all Panthers as the 5A home team used 11 hits to score that many runs in an 11-1 victory that moves BHS to 10-3 on the year.

Drew Nelson started on the mound for BHS and struck out 10 batters while not issuing a walk. Nelson gave up three hits and one unearned run. Luke Simmons threw the final inning for BHS.

Nelson, Elijah Calcote, Bryson Porter and Walker Moak all hit safely for BHS. Mason White had a pair of hits for the Panthers and Porter led the team with a triple.

BHS will begin region play on Friday with a trip to play at Florence High.

 

Enterprise 7, Bogue Chitto 3

First year Enterprise head coach Austin Hood and his Yellow Jackets are 9-3 overall after getting a 7-3 win over Bogue Chitto on Monday.

Prewitt Falvey had the hot bat for the Jackets as he drove in three runs on three hits. Falvey homered for EAC while also hitting a double and a single. Payne Waldrop and Kelly Burgess each hit a double apiece as well.

Hood used four pitchers in getting the win. Ryder martin drew the start and struck out seven in 4.1 innings of work. Also making mound appearances for the Yellow Jackets were Waldrop, A.J. Raiford and Nick Harris.

Tucker Kyzer drove in two runs for the Bobcats and Noah Magee also had an RBI for Bogue Chitto.

Enterprise is scheduled to play Loyd Star twice next week, on Tuesday (3/21) at LS and on Friday (3/24) at home.

 

McComb 10, Wesson 4

Four errors by Wesson had a big hand in the Cobras losing 10-4 at McComb High on Saturday.

Landan Beasley, Will Loy, Gabe Selman and Wyatt Garrett had an RBI each for coach Vance Windom in the loss.

Wesson is 5-5 on the season and will play twice on Thursday in a tournament hosted by Florence High. The Cobras are scheduled to face Terry High at 1 p.m. and Pisgah High at 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Wesson will then host Pisgah on Saturday (3/18) for a game that’s scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

 

Simpson Academy 9, Loyd Star 2 — Tri-County Academy 7, Loyd Star 3

Loyd Star dropped a pair of games Monday in tournament play hosted by Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit.

Simpson got five runs in the first inning of the opener and outhit the Hornets 6-3. Nathan Mills drove in two runs for coach Jared Britt in the loss. Simpson Academy is currently 15-1 on the season.

The second game of the day for the Hornets followed a similar pattern as Tri-County Academy of Flora went up 2-0 after the first inning and 5-3 after two complete.

Caleb Smith drove in one run for the Hornets against Tri-County.

Loyd Star is 8-4 and will next play on March 21 vs. Enterprise at home.
