BROOKHAVEN — Senior golfer Hunter Brewer walked up to the apron of No. 6 at Brookhaven Country Club and measured his shot. He took a practice swing before stroking a ball right at the pin and it disappeared.

“No way,” one of the golfers in his group exclaimed. The leftie had made his only birdie of the round on what was a great chip shot. He had to get the ball up a hill at a location others struggled with all day. The green was fast and unforgiving on No. 6 but he found a way to beat it in the golf match Monday.

“I was just trying to play it close. It is not the first time I’ve chipped in a shot but it was the first time today,” Brewer said. “My short game killed me today. I need to work on my wedges. My putting was alright. Short game saved me on that hole though.”

His shot prior to the birdie chip was a worm scorcher barely leaving the ground and skipping to the front left of the green. It was enough to set up the perfect shot. Brewer finished the round with a 47, third best on the Brookhaven High squad.

Brookhaven’s Zach Hirsch shot the low score for the day with a 41, Charlie Adams shot a 46, Brooklyn Lee shot a 48 and Brandt Luper shot a 51.West Lincoln’s Sherman Hyer shot a 46, Gabe Gennaro shot a 46, Luke Gennaro shot a 53. Enterprise’s Jared Nations shot a 45.

Brewer started playing golf at Brookhaven when he was in seventh grade and is now in year six with the Panthers. He and Hirsch were seventh graders playing at state six years ago. Now his goal is to return to state.

Brewer’s grandpa worked at Co-Lin’s Wolf Hollow so he has been around the golf course since he was a toddler. He is an employee of the country club when he is not out playing golf.

“I enjoy the sport. I don’t have to run at all,” he said. “I would like to go to state this year. I have to get there with my team though.”

After high school, he plans to attend Co-Lin Community College where he will take care of classes until leaving for Mississippi State in Starkville. He will study electrical engineering because he is good at math and said the electrical side of engineering is where the money is. His dad works at Entergy and he would like to pursue a career with the company after college.
