More than 40 students and adults from Brookhaven Academy are exploring the nation’s capital city and the Big Apple this week.
Plans for the trip began when students in the National Honor Society at BA brought the idea to club sponsors to plan an educational trip to Washington DC and New York City.
The idea was to have opportunities to see and tour some of the nation’s most historic sites. More than 30 10th-12th-grade NHS students and more than a dozen teachers and chaperones left Monday for a five-day trip. They visited DC Monday through Wednesday, and will spend Thursday and Friday in New York. A national education tour group led the students for the week.
The trip came about after a year of planning, BA Director of Development Shannon Miller said.
Students visited the Smithsonian Museum of American History, and were able to see the Washington Monument and the White House. They visited Mount Vernon, Old Town Alexandria, Arlington National Cemetery and met with hometown Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith.
“Students had an amazing experience visiting the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial,” said Miller.
The group also had walking tours of the WWII Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Lincoln Memorial.
In New York, the group saw the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 Memorial, Central Park, the financial district and other sites of interest.
“I’m excited our students had a first-hand opportunity to experience some of our nation’s most historic memorials and landmarks,” said administrator Page Nelson. “These memories will last a lifetime and hopefully will inspire our students.”
