BROOKHAVEN — According to the latest NWS Jackson severe storm threat map, Lincoln County is at a higher enhanced risk of severe storms than it was this morning. It appears anything north of Brookhaven is at an enhanced risk while anything south is at a slight risk.
Storms are forecast to bring damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, golf ball sized hail and tornadoes, some possibly strong, to the enhanced risk areas. Slight risk areas will see slightly smaller hail and not as strong winds.
NWS Jackson forecasts the storm to hit the area in a window between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. Saturday.
Threats from the severe storm will decrease the further south and east the front moves tonight. Residents should make sure they have ways to be notified of a watch or warning as the storm passes through at night.
Lincoln County has experienced one tornado this year. An EF1 touched down in the Little Bahalia community in February destroying a trailer and damaging another home. Mississippi has had 15 official tornadoes touchdown this year and more could come with tonight’s severe weather.
Rain could hit Brookhaven around 4 p.m. There is a 40 percent chance of rain from then until the evening. Tonight, there is a 70 percent chance of rain in the area. Strong winds are forecast for the evening commute so be careful if you drive in a high profile vehicle.
