Here’s a look at how area schools faired in high school baseball action this week.

Loyd Star 9, St. Andrew’s 8

Coach Jared Britt and his Loyd Star Hornets (10-4) got two wins this week, both in similarly close fashion.

The Hornets eked out a close against their county rivals Enterprise on Tuesday via a 2-1 final score.

On Thursday, the Hornets hit the road and built a big early lead, before holding off a St. Andrew’s Episcopal comeback attempt to escape with a 9-8 victory.

SAE went up 3-0 after the first inning, but Loyd Star scored five runs in the third inning and two runs in the fourth to hold a 7-3 advantage.

That lead was 9-4 before St. Andrew’s came to bat for their final turn in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Blake Thornton, Eli Thornton, Nathan Mills and Carter Holcomb all made mound appearances as pitchers for the Hornets as the Loyd Star hurlers threw a combined 174 pitches.

St. Andrew’s outhit the Hornets 10-4, but the Saints were done in by seven errors in the loss.

Conner Cunningham drove in three runs for Loyd Star offensively. Case DeHart, Caleb Smith and Blake Thornton all also had an RBI each for the victors. Cunningham and Smith both had a double apiece.

Loyd Star will take on East Marion next week in Region 7-2A play. The Hornets will play at EM on Tuesday and then host a doubleheader on Friday, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Brookhaven Aca. 3, Columbia Aca. 1 — Brookhaven Aca. 13, Columbia Aca. 8

Brookhaven Academy remained perfect in district play with two wins this week over Columbia Academy. The Cougars, coached by Calebe Upton, now sit at 10-9 on the season after also getting three division wins last week against Bowling Green School.

On Tuesday at home, BA pitcher Judson Griffin threw seven innings and led the Cougars to a 3-1 win. Griffin needed 100 pitches to get through the complete game and gave up just three hits, while striking out 11 and walking just three batters.

BA only got three hits as well and struck out 10 times as a team in a pitcher’s dual between Griffin and Holton Hartzog of Columbia.

Easton Boyte led BA at the plate on Tuesday with a double and an RBI. Matthew Newman drove in two runs for the Cougars on one hit. Griffin was the other BA player to get a hit in the win.

Boyte and Griffin are both Co-Lin baseball signees.

On Thursday in Columbia, Upton’s squad sprung a comeback after trailing 5-2 through four complete innings. BA plated five runs in the fifth inning, two runs in the sixth inning and four more runs in the seventh inning.

The Cougars from Brookhaven outhit the Cougars from Columbia 13-9 in the game.

Freshman Caleb Authement had the big bat for BA on Thursday night as he went 4-of-5 with five RBIs that came via a double and home run.

Griffin had two hits as did his younger brother Avery Griffin. Taylor Daughdrill also had two hits for the Cougars.

Trevor Fortenberry pitched the win for BA, striking out six and walking two batters in five innings.

BA is off until Thursday, when they’ll travel to West Marion to take on the Trojans at 6:30 p.m.

Bogue Chitto 16, East Marion 2 — Bogue Chitto 18, East Marion 5

Bogue Chitto routed East Marion Thursday on the road after blasting the Eagles 12-2 on Tuesday at home.

Coach Gareth Sartin’s squad is now 10-6 on the season and will play three games next week against West Lincoln in Region 7-2A action.

On Thursday, the Bobcats got a double each from Tucker Kyzar, Myles Foil and Easton Sartin in game one. Foil drove in three runs while Sartin and Kyzer drove in two each. Caden Holder also had a pair of RBIs for the Bobcats in the win.

Colton Frith threw a complete game win, striking out five and giving up three hits in five innings.

Kyzar pitched the victory in game two as EM led 5-4 after two innings before Bogue Chitto poured on six runs in the third and eight runs in the fourth to end the game after four innings.

Noah Magee hit a double for the Bobcats while Jax Leggett and Tripp McCaffrey had a triple apiece. Leggett and Kyzer each drove in two runs for BC.

Foil pitched the in at home on Tuesday as he struck out 11 and gave up just two hits in the win.

West Jones 7, Brookhaven 1 — West Jones 10, Brookhaven 0

West Jones took control of the Region 5-5A standings this week with a sweep of Brookhaven High.

The Panthers won the region last season in thrilling fashion with a win over West Jones at home in the third matchup of the season between the teams.

On Tuesday at Moyer Field, the visiting Mustangs led 2-1 through four innings before getting two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to pad their lead. WJ outhit BHS 14-4.

Freshman Dreamus Harron started on the mound and struck out seven in four innings. Drew Nelson and Ben Adams both pitched in relief.

JP Wallace, Elijah Calcote, Jonah Smith and Gaylen Gayton each hit safely in the loss.

Wallace had two hits in the loss on Thursday at WJ while Nelson, Smith, Mason White and Bryson Porter all hit safely as well.

Coach Matt White’s Panthers are 1-2 in region play as they beat Florence High 10-6 in their division opener last week.

BHS is scheduled to host McComb on Saturday, March 25 and they’ll play Natchez twice next week in further region play.

Wesson 17, Jefferson County 0 — Wesson 18, Jefferson County 0

The Cobras got a combined 21 hits on Tuesday in getting a region sweep of visiting Jefferson County.

Landan Beasley hit a double while Ethan Laird and Korbin Ashmore had a triple apiece for the Cobras in the game one win.

Gabe Selman needed just 20 pitches to get through two innings to earn the win. He struck out five.

Senior Will Loy threw a 3-inning no-hitter in the second game. Loy struck out eight, walked one and needed just 41 pitches to get it done.

At the plate in the finale, Preston Selman hit a double and Wyatt Garrett hit a triple for Wesson.

Preston Selman and Grayson Coates drove in three RBIs apiece in game two. Laird had four RBIs in the opener and Ashmore added three RBIs in that game.

West Lincoln 17, Amite County 7 — West Lincoln 12, Amite County 0

Coach Tony Davis saw his West Lincoln Bears stack up the runs this week in a three-game sweep of Amite County in Region 7-2A action.

The Bears got the week started off on Tuesday with a 20-5 win in Liberty. WL leadoff batter Korben Altman drove in four runs on two hits in the win on Tuesday. Centerfield Gabe Gennaro also had two hits on Tuesday as did Taylor Myers and Karson Temple.

Myers pitched the win for WL, striking out 10 and walking three in five innings.

In the opener on Thursday, Amite County went ahead 7-1 after two complete innings.  The Bears bounced back to score three in the third, six in the fourth, two in fifth and five runs in the sixth inning.

West Lincoln drew a whopping 17 walks in the win.

Myers drove in five runs while Temple, Caden Seay, and Carter Hall each had three RBIs apiece in game one on Thursday.

The finale was a shorter affair as Brody Dillon pitched the first two innings, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out three Trojans. Ben Segrest pitched two innings and gave up one hit while striking out three.

Gennaro, Segrest and Seay hit a triple apiece in game two. Seay drove in a team high three runs while Gennaro and Segrest had two RBIs apiece.

West Lincoln (7-5) will take on Bogue Chitto next week in a region series that will determine who sits in second place behind Loyd Star in the division standings.
