Winners catch dinner in catfish rodeo

BROOKHAVEN — Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks held a catfish rodeo Saturday at the Brookhaven fishing pond located at the Hansel King Sportsplex in northeast Brookhaven.

James McKay took first place in the boys division with a five pound catfish and Kenyah Smith took first place in the girls division with a catfish weighing in at four pounds and eight ounces. Cyan Smith finished second in the boys division with a four pound 15 ounce catfish while Abby Fernald finished second in the girls division with a four pound catfish.

Children 15 years and younger are able to participate in fishing rodeos across the state. Natchez State Park will host a fishing rodeo on April 22 beginning at 8 a.m.

Brookhaven’s fishing pond is part of the Community Fishing Assistant Program under the MDWFP. It is strictly for children 14 and under and the handicapped. MDWFP’s website defines the term “handicapped persons” to mean paraplegics, hemiplegic, anyone permanently dependent upon a wheelchair for mobility, anyone who requires the permanent use of braces, full prosthesis or crutches for walking or blindness.

The pond is stocked with bream, bass and catfish. Anglers are able to keep 10 bream, five catfish and zero bass per day from the pond. Statewide creel limits apply to all other species.
