BROOKHAVEN — Two additional tornadoes were confirmed to touch down in South Mississippi this week. One was an EF1 in Simpson County and the other was an EF1 in Jones County.

They are tornadoes No. 25 and No. 26 for Mississippi in 2023. In the past two weeks, 10 tornadoes have touched down in Mississippi killing 21 people and injuring more than 22 according to the National Weather Service. While the skies might be blue and sunny today, Wednesday will get cloudy.

NWS Jackson forecasts a marginal risk of severe storms for the southern half of Mississippi with a possibility of more tornadoes. Jones and Simpson County were under marginal risk for severe storms early Monday when those tornadoes touched down.

It could happen here again like the EF1 tornado that touched down this February in the Lincoln County community of Little Bahalia. Tornadoes are not the only risk with these severe storms. Damaging wind gusts and quarter sized hail could hit the area Wednesday afternoon and into the evening.

Wind will blow around 15 mph tomorrow with gusts hitting 30 mph. There is a 60 percent chance of rain Wednesday and by night the chance of rain drops to 50 percent. Thursday has a 70 percent chance of rain.

The low tonight is 70 and Wednesday will warm up to 84 degrees before dropping back down to 63.

Friday is supposed to be the return of the Brookhaven Farmer’s Market with Spring Market.

Weather could threaten Friday but the farmers market has a back-up plan in the event of severe weather. They announced on Facebook the event would be from 8:30 a.m. to noon rain or shine but inclement weather would force a venue change from the Railroad Park to the Amtrak Train Depot. We will give an update on where the farmers market will be the closer we get to Friday.
